ST.NESSAN’S COLLEGE

Facts

A new 750 pupil secondary school, replacing an existing school on the same site. The design response addressed the need for the existing school to remain in use until completion of the new facility

Floor area
7,000 m² (75,347 ft²)

Features

A courtyard design provides social space and circulation shortcuts and is landscaped with a variety of hard and soft surfaces reflecting the structural building grid

The double height main entrance space acts as a security lock and passive solar heat generator

Openable elements have been incorporated into the general purpose area and sports hall allowing the creation of a continuous outdoor-indoor space for special occasions

All corridors bring light deep into the building through continuous linear rooflights and lightwells between storeys

Staff accommodation is strategically located to provide supervision of circulation areas

Simple, durable materials: load-bearing blockwork walls carrying precast concrete slabs, galvanised metal, some timber, aluminium roof and wall cladding and cedar cladding in the courtyard

throughout the development for a better social mix

Precast structural and cladding elements ensure build quality, reduced carbon footprint and accelerated construction programme
