Extension of the existing student centre and remodelling of the surrounding environment to integrate the student centre and the adjacent Honan Chapel into the overall campus
Floor area 2,000 m² (21,527 ft²)
UCC Student Centre, UCC, Cork City
The new student centre is part of UCC Masterplan Strategy to establish a strong east-west axis throughout the campus via the opening of new landscaped areas and the establishment of a series of signature buildings about its route.
The Student Centre provides a transparent, active northern edge through a series of sculptural forms. A limited material palette of concrete, steel and glass were chosen to be deliberately contemporary in deference to the protected structures.
The practice was also responsible for the design of a new square, with amphitheatre-like seating for informal student gatherings and which acts as termination of the east-west axis, also integrating the protected Honan Chapel into the campus for the first time.
